Pit stops: Bastions of barbecue

That's barbecue, not grilling. And what better way to celebrate the first day of summer than up-to-here in sauce and napkins? Head to one of these joints. They're smokin'.

Bobbique , 70 W. Main St., Patchogue; 631-447-7744; $15-$30

Start with snacks, including fried pickle chips and hot chicken wings. Then, get going with the addictive pulled pork, meaty St. Louis-style ribs, sweet potato fries, corn-on-the-cob, lots more. Dissenters can have salmon. Bobbique has a major list of beers to go with all of it.

Smokin' Al's Famous BBQ Joint , 19 W. Main St., Bay Shore; 631-206-3000; cost $15-$30

There just something about those "burnt ends," crusty bits served on onions, that kicks off a meal. Or maybe some chili. You'll also become devoted to the Carolina-style pulled pork, husky beef brisket, smoked chicken, smoked sausage, baby back ribs, St. Louis-style ribs and "monster beef bones."

Swingbellys Beach Side BBQ , 909 W. Beech St., Long Beach; 516-431-3464; cost $15-$25

You'll get a mouthful, from pulled pork and batter-fried pickle chips to "burnt ends" chili, St. Louis-style ribs, smoked andouille sausage, and a pulled pork-beef brisket combo dubbed a Belly Buster. A Cuban sandwich, properly porky, may be a special.

Townline BBQ , Montauk Highway at Townline Road, Sagaponack; 631-537-2271; cost $15-$25

From the owners of the full-Hamptonian Nick & Toni's of East Hampton comes a full-flavored destination for pulled pork, pork ribs, beef short ribs, beef brisket, kielbasa, Texas chili, vegetarian chili, baked beans and, yes, fried cherry pie.
