Smokin' Al's: Free barbecue if Yankees lose

Smokin’ Al Horowitz is going whole hog for a Yankee win. “I believe in the Yankees so much that if they lose to the Phillies, the barbecue’s on me,” said the barbecue baron, who has restaurants in Bay Shore and Massapequa Park.

Here’s the deal: If you place a credit card catering order of $200 to $500 before Wednesday, Oct. 28 (specifying “World Series promotion”), Horowitz won’t process the card unless the Yanks win.

Last time Horowitz tried something like this was during the 2008 Super Bowl. Then, he lost between $15,000 and $20,000 when the underdog New York Giants beat the New England Patriots. “Everybody thought I was rooting against the Giants,” he said, “but when they won, it was one of my happiest moments.”

The difference between the Super Bowl and the World Series, Horowitz explained, was that for the football event, the free barbecue was in celebration. For the World Series, it would be as a consolation. “I want the Yankees to win,” he said, “but in my heart, I also want the customer to win some Smokin' Al’s.”

Whatever the outcome, Horowitz feels he comes out ahead. “I like to do things that are more fun than the usual promotions. It causes excitement and gets people to talk.”  And to party.
