The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene

  • Islip Terrace: Good food at Brookwoods

Sunrise Highway, which has stretches that qualify as Desolation Row for restaurants, finds a winner with Brookwoods in Islip Terrace.

Chef John Scunziano's American-continental eatery offers savory gumbo and New England-style clam chowder, plus a fibrous and fine porterhouse steak and a diverting finale, "cannoli parfait," which is exactly that.

The menu is loaded with local references, from a spin on fettuccine all'Alfredo dubbed The Connetquot to a chicken dish named for Robert Moses -- although he did seem more a red meat kind of guy.

The community-oriented spot gives a percentage of the tab to your choice of  school district in the Town of Islip.

Brookwoods is at 2765 Sunrise Hwy., Islip Terrace, near Carleton Avenue; 631-277-5500.
