Knitting for charity

Once you've been bitten by the knitting bug, the skill can become addictive. And you can create only so many scarves, hats and afghans for yourself, family and friends. Many knitters sooth that itch by knitting for charity. Deer Park's Care to Knit, founded by Ines Basso Glick in 2005 after she retired from teaching in the Mineola school district, brings together knitters and crocheters with those who need them nursing homes, the needy, cancer patients and those in hospice. Care to Knit holds "commu-KNIT-y" days at knitting shops, Glick says, and the group is always looking for people to knit lap blankets for nursing home residents, and children's sweaters and hats for the needy. The group also works with schools to teach kids to knit for charity and, at the other end of the age spectrum, networks with senior knitters, including the Knit Chicks, who meet at the Bel Air Condo in East Meadow. Call or e-mail Care to Knit to donate knitted or crocheted items, or to find a knitting circle.
With warm, sunny weather, it's the perfect time to explore the best parks for kids.
