Kidsday interviews singers Aly & AJ

We interviewed singers Aly & AJ at the Javit's Center in Manhattan.

When did you first get interested in music?

Aly : AJ and I were like 3 and 5 when we started singing. We really decided to be like a band at 9 and 11. We said we are going to do this. We are going to try and get signed and get a record deal. AJ: We always loved entertaining, whether it was dancing or putting on a show or acting.

How do you guys get along?

Aly: We don't fight that much. AJ: I would say we are best friends. We are just a few years apart and we kind of have the same views on everything. We are really supportive of each other. We are not competitive with each other like a lot of siblings can be. We have the same interests, have a lot in common. We argue about little things like clothes like any siblings would. Aly: We have the same friends. We lead separate lives, and be independent too. We are cool with that, at the end of the day it is cool to have a sister.

How do feel when you get in front of a crowd?

AJ: We get excited. We get a rush, it is just like the song . We get this energy that pumps into our veins. We get all excited before we perform. We like to see the fans and watch them sing along to our music. Aly: It never gets old or something that you get used to. It is always something that is new. It is a new town, a new crowd. Going on different tours playing different music, or premiering a new CD, stuff like that is always going to be different.

What do you guys do in your free time besides singing?

Aly: We hang out with our friends. We love food so we are always going out to restaurants. We are constantly writing. We are trying to work out and stay in shape. We read a lot. It is very relaxing.

Do you agree on your music?

Aly: We have similar tastes; what we think is good, what we think is bad, what we think needs to be improved. That is why we work so well together. AJ: We are both pretty hard on one another if an idea is not good enough. We say like, No that is good, but we can make that better. Let's keep pushing for a better.

Did you have a band when you were younger?

AJ: We did and it was called Rock the House. It was just us two really. Our friends would come to watch. But there wasn't really a band it was us dancing and singing to CDs.

Do you guys write your own songs or is it somebody else?

AJ: We write all of our own stuff. Sometimes it just comes. Sometimes I think it is something you are just born with, you get a vibe, you get an idea whether it is lyric idea or a melody. We just end up collaborating with each other and it just flows. It could take a day or two days. Other times it can take a long time and you end up revisiting it after months. Aly: It is a longer process when we are making a record. We have to go to the studio to write if you are writing with somebody else. Or you are at home with just the two of us. The you have to go an actually record the music, and lay down your vocals. It is a longer process, but it is so much more rewarding because it is your music.

Do you have any hobbies?

Aly: We like going horseback riding, going to the spa and getting facials. We like to hang out with our friends. We are like being outside, we are very outdoorsy. We like to go camping, mountain biking. AJ: We like to dance.

Are you close friends?

AJ: We are. We are close to the family and to the other kids. It's kind of cool we grew up together, we lived in Seattle. There are two families in particular that we have kept in contact with. One of the guys goes to college fairly close to where we live so we visit him sometimes. We haven't been back to Seattle in a long time, I want to go back to visit.

Are there other siblings in your family?

Aly: Nope, it is just us. We have our little pets, they are our siblings.
