We had never been to a book signing before, but we love books, so this was the best place for us to be! It was a great pleasure to meet Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus at Barnes & Noble in Lake Grove.
These two accomplished women are the authors of "The Nanny Diaries," which was made into a movie, and their newest book, "The REAL Real" ($16.99, Harperteen).
"The REAL Real" is a book about a teenager from the Hamptons who is selected for a reality TV show. It describes her journey through the lights, cameras and action of the popular crowd. If you think peeking behind the scenes at a reality show would be interesting, or you want to know what life in the Hamptons would be like, this book is for you. Emma and Nicola even did a reading from their book, which was really neat because it was like watching a scene from a play. They both read.
We really enjoyed speaking to both authors. They met in college at NYU, decided they should do some type of writing project together, and the rest is history. You can tell they are really great friends as well. One of the things they stressed to us is that they write their characters as realistically as possible, and they like characters who act as individuals and don't feel the pressure to always go along with the crowd. Their personal philosophies reflect this idea. They believe it is OK to be yourself and even disagree with your closest friends. Differences in people make life more interesting.
We will not forget this unique encounter with these two amazing women.
We look forward to reading "The REAL Real," which is in bookstores now. The book is for teens and older.
With warm, sunny weather, it's the perfect time to explore the best parks for kids.
