We met WWE World Heavyweight wrestling champion and actor John Cena while he was in New York recently.
Why do you like wrestling?
I love it because I get to be athletic and at the same time it is very very exciting. If you have ever been to a WWE event the fans get very, very excited. I like that.
Was beating Edge hard?
It always is because he always seems to find some way to win. Even when he loses, he seems to win.
Who is your best friend in the WWE?
My best friend from WWE is Santino. He is the funniest guy because he is such an idiot. He is cool to hang around with and we hang around a lot.
Which do you like better wrestling or acting?
I like them both. The reward is kind of different. With a movie, it takes like eight months to make the movie so you dont see a reward until eight months later and you totally kind of forget about it. With wrestling, the second you walk through the curtain people are going bananas so you are immediately satisfied with wrestling. But the movie is equally as satisfying it just takes a little longer.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I am trying to learn how to fish, but I am not very good at it. The fish like me when they see me coming to the pond because I don't catch anything. I also like to work on old cars. Besides that, just hang out at the house with my dog. I got a little mini schnauzer.
What is your exercise program and how did you get so big?
I have been lifting weights for quite a long time, since I was 12 years old. I even went to college to learn how to lift weights better. I have a degree in exercise science, which is pretty much learning the human body and learning how to make it stronger and make athletes better. I used what I learned in school to better my career. Right now my exercise program is pretty much that of an NFL athlete. I do a lot of multi-joint movements, a lot of stability and agility drills, some sprinting mixed in. But I just try to remain as strong as I can.
How do you get all your fans to like you?
Well, I don't force them to choose. I be myself, and I am very very honest with them. I never say anything I dont mean. I let them make up their own mind. A lot of them like me and a lot of them don't like me, but I dont get mad at the ones who dont like me. I like doing what I do.
How come you started acting?
It was kind of what we do in wrestling. You gotta be strong and you gotta be physical, but at the same time you gotta have fun and you gotta entertain. Everybody kind of saw me doing my thing in the wrestling ring and they said hey man why don't you try this acting deal out. At first I didnt know if I would like it or not, but I did a movie and I really liked it.
What is it like being famous?
I don't consider myself there yet, but it sure is busy. But it's also cool, I get to do cool stuff like this. I get to do a lot of stuff that I never dreamed would happen. I certainly appreciate all that has happened.
Who is your favorite wrestler?
Favorite wrestler of all time is Hulk Hogan. Since I was a little kid I have had a lot more favorites for a lot of different reasons, but the No. 1 guy of all time is Hulk Hogan.
How tall are you?
I am 6 feet. And if I wear cool shoes, I am maybe 6' 1".
Why do you want to do a movie?
Movies are fun. It is kind of what we do in the WWE. We kind of make mini movies. When I get the chance to do a full-length feature film, I draw on my experiences from the WWE. I enjoy them a lot and I wanted to see if it was the same kind of fun. They certainly don't have 20,000 fans screaming on a movie set, but once you see the finished product when the movie is over, it is really cool to be a part of it.
Is John Cena your real name and do you have a nickname?
John Cena is my real name. I have not been one for nicknames. If you were to give me a nickname what would it be?
Cena? That kind of works. Everybody just calls me Cena. JC works.
What was the most challenging match you ever fought?
It would be the Heartbreak Kid Shaun Michaels, Wrestlemania 23, or Triple H, Wrestlemania 22. Those are the two toughest matches I've ever had.
