Jazz on the Vine, a series of free concerts at Suffolk County wineries, kicks off Feb. 12 and continues every weekend through March 21, part of the sixth annual Long Island Winterfest. With about 60 different musicians playing 80 shows, it marks a rare convergence for jazz fans. (It also coincides with the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour, a multi-performer event making two stops in Long Island, Feb. 13 and Feb. 14.)

Not bad for a musical idiom that often seems to be going the way of the vinyl album.

WHO'S PLAYING

The highlights include a show Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Wölffer Estate Vineyards in Sagaponack with pianist Judy Carmichael, a Hamptons local known for her light-hearted but technically proficient stride style. That concert is part of the Steinway Series, which features various musicians playing pianos supplied from the Melville showroom of Steinway & Sons.

There's also a must-see show at the Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard in Calverton 1 p.m. Feb. 13 with The John Ellis Trio, whose saxophonist bandleader was once part of Charlie Hunter's group but now plays his own quirky, witty originals.

Among the local talents are Monday Michiru, a well-regarded soul-singer (playing 2 p.m. Feb. 13 at Laurel Lake Vineyards) and the Trevor Davison Swing Jazz Quartet (4 p.m. March 20 at Raphael), both based in Jamesport.

And fans of jazz's golden age won't want to miss Riverhead's Teddy Charles, the 81-year-old vibraphonist who earned his chops working with Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Slim Gaillard and even Benny Goodman. He plays at 3 p.m. Feb. 27 at Duck Walk Vineyards North.
