Aaron Karo really would like to get married - someday. Maybe even by the time he's 40.
But for now, the 30-year-old comedian and author wants to stay single, even if most of the women he dates have one thing on their minds - the C word (as in commitment).
Karo, who hails from Plainview but now lives in Los Angeles, has more to say about singlehood in "I'm Having More Fun Than You" (It Books, $13.99), which he recently talked about at the Book Revue in Huntington. He recently shared his thoughts on being single and how his book came about.
What is it about turning 30 that inspired you to write this book?
I realized when you turn 30, women are desperate for guys to get down on one knee. It's really my defense of bachelorhood. . . . There's all this pressure put on you by family and friends, you're ostracized. ... The other thing is that for guys as they turn 30, they have a little bit of money, they know where their place is in the world.
What does your mother have to say to all of this?
It's a little different when you're an author and a comedian at 30, so she's given up on pressuring me. I have a younger sister, and I've tried to pawn off some of the pressure onto her. Men also have the benefit of being able to wait a little longer because of how society is. My dad said at this point, my mom would be OK with it if I had a kid out of wedlock.
On your Web site, you say that you understand women better now. What have you learned?
A lot of stuff I talk about in the book is that women aren't necessarily opposed to hooking up and one-night stands. They just don't want it to feel like a one-night stand. The important thing is making a girl feel more comfortable around you. Women are smarter than guys, and they know what they're doing. Women don't really do anything against their will.
What's your idea of a good first date?
I usually like to go out for drinks on a first date. I don't like to do dinner because I'm a messy eater. Dinner is very formal, and even at 30, I still feel kind of immature. Sometimes, I feel like a little kid. I leave dinner for the third or fourth date. A lot of my friends met their husband or wife in what started out as a one-night stand. So if a girl says no on the first night, I tell her she's not marriage material.
When you do finally get married, what's your idea of the perfect woman?
I like brunettes. I have a fantasy about marrying a doctor because that's one job I couldn't do. And she has to move to New York. I would like to move back to Long Island then and have a family. Plainview has good public schools, and it's really close to Manhattan.
