10 tips for a full-figured bride

June 5, 2008
1. Know your shape. Are you a pear, inverted triangle, rectangle or hourglass shape? Body shape is more important than a tag number. If you dress for your body you'll look great.

2. Know your assets and accent the positive. For some it's arms, for others its legs, shoulders, bosom, neck, waist, etc... If you have great shoulders consider a strapless or halter bodice. If you have shapely legs consider a hi-lo hemline to show them off.

3. Deemphasize 'problem areas' with the right silhouette. For pear shapes an Empire silhouette and waistline can focus the eye on beautiful shoulders and draw it away from wide hips. If you have a tummy an A-line skims the body to elongate your body.

4. Try to stay away from stiff fabrics, which tend to pull. Instead choose soft fabrics that work with and not against your curves.

5. Don't buy a gown that's a size smaller with the intention of dieting to fit it. This almost never works. Get the right fit from the start.

6. Remember comfort. You'll want to choose a gown that works in the real world. Remember all the activities of the day. Take the gown for a test drive at the salon to see how comfortable it is in different positions (sitting, dancing, posing for photos) to see how you feel.

7. Don't forget undergarments. The right ones will help enhance your curves. Be sure bras and bustiers fit properly and comfortably.

8. If possible, begin shopping for your gown at least eight to 12 months before the wedding.

9. When you shop for your gown don't bring a crowd with you, just one or two people whose opinions you trust. You know what they say about too many cooks...

10. Remember you're getting married and it's your day. If you choose a gown that's reflective of your style, you will look and feel your most beautiful. What could be better?
