A fixture in the heart of Riverhead's Polishtown since 1929, the Birchwood has a cozy, old pub feel, with its original tin ceiling, old-fashioned brass register behind the bar, red and white checkered tablecloths, stained glass and memorabilia and antiques. The dining room can seat about 100 and there is a separate catering hall.
Burgers and steaks are the top attractions, with a marinated shell steak costing $18.95, including a soup or salad, choice of potato and a vegetable. The Birchwood has a selection of Polish entrees. A combo platter includes kielbasa, sauerkraut, pirogies and more for $14.95. Another popular choice is the "Ultimate Pu-pu Platter," with chicken wings, spare ribs, potato pancakes, pirogies, onion rings, kielbasa and sauerkraut. It costs $27.94 and could feed four. The restaurant has a kids' menu.
