Weekend eats in Sayville

By Peter M. Gianotti

Here are three of our choices for great places to eat in Sayville.

Cafe Joelle
25 Main St.
631-589-4600

Cost $$

Casual and kid-friendly, Cafe Joelle has fare ranging from burgers and sandwiches to baked oysters, scallops oreganata, sesame shrimp and the elemental fried calamari. Desserts include the apple crumble, rice pudding, the raspberry sorbet bombe and deep-fried ice cream.

Popei's of Sayville
299 Raft Ave.
631-567-9054

Cost $-$$

Clams almost any style, fried calamari, sauteed scungilli, steamed lobster, blackened swordfish, Cajun tuna, broiled flounder -- you get the picture. Contrarians can sample six marinaras and seven Parmigianas, and a hamburger, too, at this informal eatery.

21 Main
21 Main St.
631-567-0900

Cost $$$

Steaks and seafood are the treasures of 21 Main. The big old house boasts a handsome dining room and a genial staff. The "main" events include the T-bone for two or more; sirloin, filet mignon, porterhouse, bone-in rib-eye, hanger steak and a pork porterhouse. Also, consider the steak house spring roll, St. Lou- is-style pork ribs, and the BLT salad with lobster.
