It's official: The 2008 summer flounder (aka, fluke) season opens Thursday, May 15, and runs though September 1. The minimum size limit is 201/2 inches, and anglers can keep four fish per day. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation announced the rule changes Wednesday.

Just a few days ago, water temperatures in the South Shore
bays had pushed past the 60-degree mark, and bluefish, stripers and weakfish were sliding through the inlets and deep into the bays. Then the rain, east winds and chill arrived.

It's no secret among Long Island's bottom-fishing faithful
that codfish catches have improved significantly over the past few years. While this past winter saw the best scores in a decade along the South Shore, spring cod remain a Montauk staple.

Declining winter flounder stocks have been a source of
consternation amongst the angling community in recent years. Once abundant enough that recreational catches began in late February and were measured in dozens, state-imposed restrictions now limit fishermen to keeping no more than 10 per day with a minimum length of 12 inches and a stingy season of April 1 through May 30.

Pulling alongside Upper Lake in Yaphank at lunchtime on
Wednesday, it was easy to tell that fishing season had finally arrived. Buoyed by moderate temperatures, a bevy of anglers lined the south bulkhead while casting small gold or silver spinners in hopes of connecting with their first trout of 2008.
