Fashionistas are made, not born.

"Project Runway" closes in on its next design meister when season five of the Bravo series catwalks to a close in a much-anticipated two-part finale. If the cutthroat competition has you wanting to traffic in tulle and tartan, take heart: There are plenty of local resources where you can nurture the Coco and Giorgio within.

Start 'em young. These workshops for 6- to 13-year-olds were created by a Parsons graduate who lamented the paucity of design classes when she was a preteen. In addition to learning the basics of fashion design, from cutting patterns to sewing seams, students can perfect sketching skills. Each month focuses on a different fashion trend. On the docket for October: Bohemian. Monthly programs are $140, supplies included.

Also on tap when those inflatable kiddie parties have lost a bit of their bounce: Bash-N-Fashion parties (starting at $425 for 12 children), where, along with fashion-forward goody bags, guests leave with a wearable apparel piece they make themselves.

Like many local fabric shops, this one focuses on home décor. But there are a fair number of fashion textiles in this sprawling showroom, where bolts of fabric form aisle ways as imposing as any castle corridor. Ditto for the selection of trims and brocades.
