Whether you're a follower or an iconoclast, there's a costume out there for you. But just like the perfect mate, the challenge is finding it. Here are some outposts where transformation awaits.

The staff here steadfastly refuses to name popular costumes, maintaining that once customers see their selection, they discard any preconceived notions. Speaking of conceptions, off-color costumes are a staple here; among the tamer versions we can write about is "Gotta Go Peep" for $69.99. Also on tap: a Darth Vader for Real costume for $999, and a charming Medusa for $125.
You'll also find a nice selection of latex masks, from werewolves to various other demented creatures of the night.

The Joker is the hands-down most-requested costume this year, say staffers at this cavernous showroom; you can rent the "Dark Knight" baddie for about $100 or buy a costume for half that. Other pop-culture costumes have a long shelf life, from Edward Scissorhands ($49.99) to Scarface ($48.99). Inexplicably, even Beth from TV's "Dog the Bounty Hunter" has her own costume ($35.99).
Also, the wig section here is absolutely dizzying.

Kids - go figure. This family-owned Halloween store says it can't keep a Gothicky little outfit called the Skull Fairy ($44.99) in stock. With its skull-topped headband, arm warmers, black leggings and white-polka-dotted dress, it's a macabre must-have for the 6-year-old set.
Also in demand among juice-box toters: anything Hannah Montana, Indiana Jones or "High School Musical."
