Haunted houses on Long Island

October 8, 2008
A crisp is in the air and the leaves will change color soon, which means just one thing: It's haunted house time. Whether you ran to the theaters for "Day of the Dead" or you prefer the "Scream" series, chances are Long Island has something for you (or maybe the kids) to enjoy this Halloween season.

NASSAU

Bayville Scream Park: Nighttime isn't for kids with this amusement park's regular attraction Bloodworth Manor (the main house) and the newest addition, Evil in the Woods. But you can bring the young ones to such spooky sites as Temple of Terror and Funhouse of Fear ($8 each) on kids days. The park also includes mini-golf and rope courses, an arcade and rock climbing. Admission is $39 for all attractions or you can pay a la carte at $13.75 for one attraction. Open 6 p.m.-midnight Fridays and Saturdays; 6-10 p.m. Sundays-Thursdays through Nov. 9 (kids hours 11 a.m.-6 p.m. weekends and Columbus Day). 8 Bayville Ave., Bayville, 516-62-GHOST; www.bayvillescreampark.com.

Bayville FD haunted house: Haunted firehouse tour recommended for children ages 10 and up. Open select days, call ahead. Bayville Avenue, Bayville, 516-628-3230.

Haunted Hangars at Cradle of Aviation Museum: Most Halloween attractions turn extra-creepy for older teenagers and adults after dark, but the museum is bringing back its "Haunted Hangars" special event. Small children can trick-or-treat or make crafts in one area, while older kids traipse through the museum's eight "haunted" galleries. "Be prepared to get scared, be prepared to be surprised," says spokesman Andrew Parton. $10 per person. Open 6-11 p.m. Oct. 24-25. Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Garden City, 516-572-4111; cradleofaviation.org.

Joe Allocco's Franklin Square Horror: This haunted outdoor event takes place in Joe Allocco's front yard, and this year Allocco will change what 2,000 people saw last year with a new mausoleum and a different cast of actors. The classics will stay, such as Allocco chasing everyone around with a real chain saw (but without the chain attached) and with Jason and Freddy Krueger making an entrance. "It gets bigger and bigger every year. It's a real tradition here," Allocco says. Donation for charity accepted. Open 7-11 p.m. Oct. 31. 1148 Norbay St., Franklin Square, 516-352-4250.

Valley Stream Haunted Firehouse: Come watch a frightening autopsy and have a photo taken of your own execution. Gary Shaw, a firefighter, suggests not bringing anyone under 8 or 9 years old, "And even they'll be a little scared." With an entire firehouse floor dedicated to the event, Shaw believes it's the place to be. "If they enjoy a Halloween experience that they'll come back year after year for, I think they'll enjoy it," he says. $10, $5 for children. Open 7-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 6-10 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 1 (extra hours Oct. 29-Nov. 1). 100 Brooklyn Ave., Valley Stream, 516-353-9637.
