Escape for a day to Shelter IslandSandwiched neatly between the East End's North and South Forks, Shelter Island is an often-overlooked splendor of winding nature trails, secluded beach nooks and simple small-town charm. Start your journey along the Island's North Fork and leave your car in the North Ferry's parking lot in Greenport (631-749-0139). The vehicle of choice this day has only two wheels and can be found nearby at the Bike Stopon Front Street (631-477-2432), where renting a hybrid model -- perfect for terrain ranging from flat roads to sloping, muddy trails -- all day costs $22. Catch the ferry anytime after 7:30 a.m. and, within minutes, enjoy an afternoon of leisurely exploration. Once on Shelter Island, pedal south on Route 114 (North Ferry Road), taking in breezy ocean views for about two miles. Order a take-out lunch at Planet Bliss (631-749-0053), selecting from organic wraps and sandwiches or fresh salads topped with tofu croutons, sauteed cabbage and homemade dressings. Replenish while you wait with a freshly squeezed concoction from the juice bar or a custom-blended smoothie. Keep biking south and you'll soon be swallowed by the Mashomack Preserve (631-749-1001). Home to countless breeds of songbirds, waterfowl and protected plant species, the habitat is 2,039 acres, or one-third of Shelter Island. Chain the bikes at the entrance (locks are provided with the rental) and set off on foot on hiking trails ranging in distance from one to 11 miles. There's a lot to see -- vast pinewood forests, grassy meadowlands, freshwater ponds and miles of coastline. It's not unusual to spot deer, owls, osprey and even the occasional fox. Stop anywhere along the way to sit and enjoy lunch before wandering back to reality. Shawna Van Ness is a features producer for Newsday.com. Copyright 2008 Newsday Inc. |
