We recently spoke to New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck at the Tudor Hotel in Manhattan.
Why did you get involved in the Toys for Tots Literacy Program?
My mom, my dad and my entire family stressed the importance of education and reading. When I was given the opportunity to do this, it is something I had been looking forward to for a long time.
Why is the Literacy program so important to you?
It really hits home as far as giving back to the kids; that's the future of the world. We have to start when they are young . . . that really sets the foundation in today's youth. (toysfortotsliteracy.org.)
What was your favorite football team when you were growing up?
I am ashamed to say the Dallas Cowboys. As you can tell, that has changed; they're probably my least favorite now.
Who was your inspiration growing up, and how has that person helped you?
I would say for the most part, my father. Just seeing how hard he worked to provide for his family, and he always made sure we never wanted for anything. He was my hero, and he continues to be the guy I look up to.
Notre Dame is a hard school; did you always want to go there?
I wanted to go to the University of Alabama. I always dreamed about playing football at Alabama, but as I got older, I really fell in love with all the opportunities Notre Dame provided. It was the best of both worlds. It gave me an avenue to be great academically and athletically.
Did playing football push you to get good grades?
Absolutely. My father preached to me that I couldn't play anything unless I had a B-plus average. The days I came home with B's, he didn't let me play anything.
What was the ticker-tape parade like?
It made me feel like I was a rock star. It was amazing to see all the people come out and celebrate . . . hopefully we can do it again next year.
What is on your Super Bowl ring?
The Giants got their rings, made of white gold and diamonds, May 29.] As long as my name and number are on it, and it says champion on it, I am fine.
