Fifteen students from St. Dominic Elementary School's eighth-grade class in Oyster Bay went to Tavern on the Green in Central Park to sell cupcakes for Duncan Hines and CancerCare for Kids "Cupcakes for a Cause" bake sale fundraiser.
We all made creative cupcakes the night before and brought them into the city. Once we arrived at Tavern on the Green, we were told to sell the cupcakes for $2 each. We were provided lunch and cupcakes. People from both CancerCare for Kids and Duncan Hines spoke about how much it meant to them to be helping cancer patients and their families.
Cupcake cookbook author Clare Crespo gave a demonstration about how to make creative cupcakes. She displayed cupcakes resembling spaghetti and meatballs and a hamburger. This bake sale kicked off nationwide contest to create the nation's most creative cupcake.
At our event, the cupcakes were bought by journalists and other guests. We raised $410 in just a few hours. CancerCare helps kids deal with cancer in their family. We had a lot of fun and were happy to know that the money raised was going to a good cause.
For more on how you can participate, visit the Web site: cupcakesforacause.org. It runs through Nov. 1.
