What are retailers thinking? Despite the gloomy economy, and, as of April, an alarming number of empty storefronts in the Hamptons, fashionable shops are springing up like crazy. Of course, some retailers are taking baby steps, such as leasing temporary spaces (better known as pop-up stores).
But likely they're all betting that the famously intoxicating combo of sun, surf, socializing and some serious dough will add up to one very significant fact: Shoppers will shop.
We asked Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, who has a home in Bridgehampton and stars on Bravo's "The Real Housewives of New York City," how she'll approach shopping this season. "For me, shopping is spontaneous, and I love the flavor of shopping in the Hamptons because it's laid-back and great fun," she replied. As for the lousy economy? "Life goes on. People are there to relax and summer, and they need new things for pool parties and events." Though she certainly plans on doing her fair share of shopping, she says, "We need the Jill Zarins (her acquisitional castmate . . . me-ow) of the world to keep the economy moving."
On that optimistic note, here's a look at some of the new businesses in the Hamptons this summer. And if you can't buy this season, well . . . there's always window-shopping.
BRIDGEHAMPTON
Gloria Jewel: 2486 Main St., 631-613-6034
Hip, simple, chic pieces, from dresses to jeans to jewelry, are available at this 800-square-foot boutique that opened in mid-March, the sister shop to another of the same name in Jamesport. Owner Megan Leary says, "With the economy issue, people are looking for special pieces. So we look for new labels that are feminine and flirty and feel good to wear."
EAST HAMPTON
La Perla: 66 Newtown Lane, 631-771-3232,
laperlausa.com
A newly opened pop-up store will be open for the summer, showcasing bathing suits, pareos, tunics and, or course, its famous lingerie.
Kristen Farrell Boutique: 19 Main St., 631-329-8900
This 900-square-foot pop-up store features Farrell's own work. A classically trained goldsmith, her style runs toward the medieval, yet is feminine and edgy. Fans include Jessica Alba and Tyra Banks; priced from $2,800 to $150,000.
Jewel Hampton: 60 Newtown Lane, 631-267-8400
Oh, you wanted a Rolex this summer? At this way-upscale jewelry consignment shop, previously owned high-end jewelry and watches are sold at good prices. At the shop, which is affiliated with Mayfair Rocks (in its 11th season), you can turn in your old Bulgari ring and get cash if it sells, or something swanky and fresh for your collection. "People get excited about changing it up a bit," says Mayfair Rocks' vice president, Lauren Kulchinsky. Prices $500 to "the sky's the limit," Kulchinsky says.
Tommy Hilfiger: 69 Main St., 631-324-0540
It's a blast of all things Tommy and more at this fresh 1,850-square-foot store, where you'll find the brand's sportswear and swimwear as well as Hilfiger's runway collection and one-of-a-kind vintage pieces by designers such as Chanel, YSL and Pucci. There's also a new clothing line called Hamptons Bohemian, which includes lobster prints and cricket sweaters.
Hermès: 63 Main St., 631-324-1177
For years, the French luxury brand has shipped products directly to its well-heeled clients in the Hamptons, but this summer it will open its first seasonal store, a summery spot that will sell bathing suits, pareos, warm weather ready-to-wear, cashmere shawls, casual jewelry, beach towels, hostess gifts and, natch, scarves.
Malia Mills Swimwear: 55 Main St.
Last summer, they opened in Southampton, now here. Find fabulous swimsuits (two new styles already are being snapped up: the Shimmy Shake swim dress and a one-piecer called the Dreamboat). Also, great hats designed by famed milliner Patricia Underwood, and versatile cashmere layering pieces by Inhabit. (Opens Memorial Day.)
