The American Hotel

Main Street
Sag Harbor, NY
631-725-3535

The American Hotel is a local landmark. It's known for very good food and a wine list nearly as long as a Russian novel. There are about 1,700 selections in this entertaining volume. The establishment has its regulars and is in its own way a tourist attraction, too. You'll enjoy the vintage style of the place, which appears to preside over downtown Sag Harbor in Empire and Victorian fashion. The food is French-American, or vice versa. The appetizers usually include onion soup gratinee, smoked duck salad, shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon, raw shellfish and some sushi and sashimi. At dinner, consider local flounder amandine, grilled or steamed lobster, Long Island duckling with orange sauce, grilled sirloin Bordelaise, steak au poivre, and rack of lamb. Cheesecake and floating island are typical desserts.
