New-look Mets set up to succeed this September

The clubhouses, the dugouts and the field were completely barren at Shea Stadium yesterday afternoon, except for Billy Wagner, out there throwing with a trainer. Wagner felt strong and upbeat under the overcast sky. It was merely overcast. By his reckoning, there weren't the same bleak clouds that shrouded the Mets a year ago.

LI GOLFBEAT: The odd life of assistant pros

People think being an assistant golf pro is a terrific job. Assistant pros agree, which is why they do it. They get to be around a golf course, get to talk about golf and even get to play a fair amount for free.

'Fish' is moving tale of weathering storm

Sometime in the next couple of weeks, people in New Orleans will be settled in their homes again, their lives will be back to close to normal again and they will have a chance to see the postponed premiere of the movie "Walking on Dead Fish," which will mean that much more to them.

Backyard golf course a hit in the neighborhood

With the fall growing season right around the corner, the superintendent at the East Marion Golf Association's course has great hopes that everything will look fresh. He is especially optimistic about how the tiny bent grass seeds will take root and germinate.

U.S. none the worse without Tiger

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger, in Manhattan yesterday to announce his four selections to fill out the roster, surely was sincere when he said that one of his "great regrets" is that Tiger Woods will not be playing.

Same old Yanks in '09 with no youth movement

The Yankees definitely will be younger at one position next season: home stadium. You may have heard something about this. Granted, everyone in baseball has tried hard to keep it under wraps, but word has leaked out that the club is moving to a new park in 2009.

Fresh ideas for a tired game

As a celebrated instructor (national teacher of the year in 1991) and author, Michael Hebron knows just about everything there is to know about the golf swing. That includes knowing that the swing isn't the thing.

Jets leave Hofstra with nothing but memories

There was no remorse the last time the Jets changed facilities. Hofstra looked like the Taj Mahal compared to the place where they had been practicing.

Tallgrass closing? Not according to the owners

Rumors of Tallgrass' demise have been greatly exaggerated (apologies to Mark Twain).

LPGA seems to have created public relations mess

It is hard to say which ideal gets trampled more by the LPGA's new speak-English-or-you're-out policy, the spirit of golf or the spirit of America. Either way, the women's professional golf tour has turned a no-win situation into a big loss.

If Mets starters can't last, season will be short

For a change, the Mets' biggest headache did not wait until the end of the game when the bullpen coughed it up. This time, what really had them going to the medicine cabinet was the talk before the first inning, when manager Jerry Manuel admitted that John Maine might not work again this season.

Mielke stays fit and wins Met Open again

To say that Mark Mielke set a record for years between Met Open wins is good, but doesn't put it in perspective. This does: One of his close competitors in the final round Thursday, 15-year-old amateur Cameron Wilson, was not even born the last time Mielke won that tournament.

Hofstra coach Pecora inspired during tour of Iraq

When Hofstra basketball coach Tom Pecora was in a C-130 plane early this month, flying from Kuwait to Baghdad, he was not thinking so much about the 100-something degree heat or intense silence on board. Nor was he focused on the body armor he was wearing. Nor was he particularly musing about the fact that it was not the safest place in the world.

This is beginning to look like the Mets' year

Don't ask for a logical explanation because there is none. There really is no good reason to say this, but a person sure can't help have the feeling the Mets are going to win the division. Since when did logic have anything to say about the Mets winning anyway?

LI golf fans deserve a regular Tour stop

Pro golf never seemed farther away than it does this week, with the PGA Tour in Paramus, N.J., rather than its old home at the Westchester Country Club. As far as Long Island fans are concerned, it might as well be in Kansas.

Yankees can't take playoffs for granted anymore

Everyone knows how it is going to end. Somehow, the Yankees are going to find a way to put it together and wind up on their feet. We have all seen it a million times, so we expect to see it a million and one.

Long, storied history of Port Jeff CC revealed

There is history in those hills, more than anyone knows, even as they are walking on them during a round at Port Jefferson Country Club (formerly Harbor Hills).

Gordon seemingly right guy to build hope in Isles

Yes, Scott Gordon really does have a knack for building hope in young hockey players. Erik Gordon, 9, had time to kill while he was hanging around his mother's Atlanta ballet school recently, so he did a big illustration on a wipe/erase message board.

LI GOLFBEAT: Outings are feeling pinch

Golf outings help pay medical expenses, defray college tuition, keep food on some families' tables. Outings do many other things, too, such as keeping some golf courses in business.

Islanders got right coach - now get right players

Scott Gordon, hired last night to coach the Islanders, definitely has the resume to win a Stanley Cup. We know this because it is the same as Peter Laviolette's, and we saw what happened to him.

Herrmann: Gotta believe this is getting old

As awash as they are in nostalgia during Shea Stadium's final season, the Mets still aren't bouncing around exclaiming, "Ya Gotta Believe!" Without a bullpen to believe in, the new credo is "We'll Try Anything," including using a starter as a closer.

LI GOLFBEAT: History echoes at Friar's Head

Judging only from some of the open, emerald fairways, you might think you were in Ireland. Judging from the views that encompass both tall trees and water, you might think you were at Pebble Beach. Judging from the general ambience, as Champions Tour player Loren Roberts recently did, you could say you were in heaven.
