• Field 6 is the shortest walk to the ocean, but the parking lot fills up very early in the morning on a daily basis.
• Here's a secret: Field 2 is basically the same as Field 6, just on the other side of the big pencil.
• Field 4 is your basic meat market of flesh and suntan lotion, which is never a bad thing. Also has the mini-golf, beach volleyball and games section, beach shop, first aid, main concessions and the restaurant (in 2008).
• If you have concert tickets, park in Field 5.
• The bike path along Wantagh Parkway begins at Cedar Creek Park in Wantagh and feeds into the Theater lot in Field 5. Enjoy the stiff headwinds going to the beach and the nice backwinds on the way home.
Fun & Games
2 pools (open daily June 24-Labor Day; $2 adults, $1 children and seniors), band shell, 4 basketball courts, 2-mile boardwalk/health walk, surf chairs for the disabled (Fields 2, 6 and Central Mall), beach ramp at Field 6, 4-mile bike path, boat basin, picnic areas, amphitheater, paddle tennis, equipment rentals, miniature golf, pitch-putt golf, 4 finger piers, surf casting, bait station, 2 softball fields (permit required), 22 shuffle board courts, food concessions.
A recent addition to the park is the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center (West End 1) with outdoor and indoor displays, hands-on children's activities and programs; call 516-679-7254; open year-round 10 a.m.-4 p.m. weekends and holidays and Wed.-Fri. and holidays May 24-Labor Day.
