Michaels' at the Boardwalk in downtown Riverhead is a recent addition and a very good spot for crab cakes, chicken potpie, roast duck and grilled kielbasa; 65 E. Main St., Riverhead; 631-591-2710.

Breakfast, lunch and brunch are the attractions at Love Lane Kitchen, where you can have a meal with a Mediterranean accent or dive into the Cuban sandwich; 240 Love Lane, Mattituck; 631-298- 8989.

Red Door in Mattituck has an updated continental-new American style. Open for dinner, it offers dishes such as grilled swordfish, rack of lamb, and pasta with escarole, beans, sausage and sun-dried tomatoes. 13560 Main Rd. (Route 25), Mattituck; 631-298-4800.

For an Italianate side trip, there's A Touch of Venice, with a pretty, waterside location and alfresco dining. The emphasis is on seafood and local fare, 2255 Wickham Ave., Mattituck; 631-298-5851.

The range of dishes at the Old Mill Inn goes from steak frites and duck confit to fried chicken and fish and chips. Burgers, too, just in case. 5775 W. Mill Rd., Mattituck; 631-298-8080.

Barbecue reigns at Farmer Bar in Cutchogue. Come here for pulled pork, smoked and barbecued brisket, St. Louis and Kansas City ribs, biscuits and gravy, some fried okra and more. 4805 Depot Lane, Cutchogue; 631-734-5410.

Just for the look of the joint, it's worth stopping by the Cutchogue Diner, a mainstay for the basics, morning, noon and night, from waffles to salads to sandwiches to main courses. Main Road (Route 25), Cutchogue; 631-734-9056.

The most ambitious newcomer is the new Jamesport Manor Inn, handsomely rebuilt after a blaze. The Euro-New American is very satisfying and very good. Winners include wild mushroom risotto, flatiron steak and herb-basted striped bass. 370 Manor Lane, Jamesport; 631-722-0500.

From the same owners and more casual is a North Fork mainstay, the homey and appropriately countrified Jamesport Country Kitchen. Sample duckling for dinner. Main Road (Route 25), Jamesport; 631-722-3537.

And because you never can have enough ice cream, consider visiting The Magic Fountain on Main Road in Mattituck; and Snowflake on West Main Street in Riverhead.
