Best German food

When was the last time you ordered pigs' knuckles and sauerkraut?
Or herring rolls stuffed with pickles and onions? Leberkase? Even sauerbraten with red cabbage and dumplings? Maybe you've sampled Wiener schnitzel or apple strudel.
German restaurants once seemed to sprout like cornflowers, with names such as Smithtown Haus and the Bavarian Inn. On Long Island, however, many haven't survived new diets and changing demographics.
These days, most eateries offering German cuisine are practical enough to expand with steaks and versions of continental cooking.
