Finn MacCool's
205 Main St.
Port Washington, NY 11050

The first recommendation about Finn MacCool's is not to go on St. Patrick's Day. Otherwise, you'll conclude the rest of the world does. This is the county of a well-poured Guinness or Harp, pubby in style but better in food, commendable for a simple meal and a pretty good time. The shepherd's pie is a longstanding favorite, with beef, vegetables and a layer of mashed potatoes. It's the right route, as are the pot roast, the corned beef, a big burger and, if they have it, smoky and buttery finnan haddie. No need to consider the stabs at Italian cooking, or any continental drift. You can skip dessert and concentrate on the perfection of that Guinness: brown-black in hue, tan head, malty and bitter, rich and perfect. Maybe go on St. Pat's anyway. Peter M. Gianotti
