In the pastel dining room of Yuki's Palette in Westbury, Yuki Tamano and Tony Sekine serve an interesting menu of Japanese favorites tweaked by a few European and New American influences. East meets West here, to pleasing effect.
Try the rainbow pepper tuna salad, seared rare slices of fish rimmed in a spicy cayenne pepper mixture and served cold on a bed of mesclun. "Sushi from Maine" features cooked lobster served sush-style, with rice and seaweed, the whole dolloped with Japanese wasabi mayonnaise.
A "Mexican" roll is fashioned of tuna and avocado with a squiggle of chili-spiked mayo on top. A real standout is the "spicy crunchy" tuna roll, which lives up to its name. Both the hamachi roll and the California roll are somehow lighter than most.
Tempura is extra-crisp and delicate. A dish called Salmon Palette features a moist pan-sauteed salmon fillet in a rich white miso butter sauce flecked with steamed white radish cubes.
Dessert is uncharacteristically Western and wonderful. Don't leave without indulging in the chocolate mousse, flecked with bits of semisweet chocolate and dolloped with freshly whipped cream. If it's available, try the autumn apple tart with spicy ginger ice cream.
Mom's apple pie meets the spring roll.
