Bertucci's

True, this is a national chain specializing in brick oven pizza. But the fact is, it happens to be excellent pizza, better than many private pizzerias are capable of turning out, even on pizza-crazy Long Island. House-baked bread is irresistible.

Pizzas come in many varieties (the "ultimate Bertucci" has each quarter topped with something different - sweet sausage, meatballs, rosemary ham and grilled chicken). You can create your own topping, using such ingredients as caramelized onions, anchovies and roasted zucchini, or go with one of the menu suggestions. Bertucci's Margherita pizza is a model of Neapolitan authenticity, with crushed Roma tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, extra Romano and fresh basil.

In addition to pizza, the place has come up with a new menu of grilled specialties, such as lemon-thyme chicken and filet mignon with Chianti sauce. There are also creative salads (like the grilled chicken "chop-chop:) and pastas, like penne puttanesca.

And there are desserts, too - if anybody has room.
