Shippy's Pumpernickel

Shippy's is among the last restaurants on Long Island where you can have a satisfying German meal. And generations of wurst devotees and sauerbraten advocates come to this informal little place situated among the Hamptonian annuals. It's the antithesis of the trendy, summery, here-today gone-tonight restaurant. Besides, German fare never made it on the diet of the moment or during the swimsuit prep work. The decor does give you a sense of place. Shippy's is worth visiting for the Wiener schnitzel and that sauerbraten, sauerkraut and dumplings, rouladen of beef, ochsenmaul salad and tangy herring. Skip the seafood, except for a shrimp cocktail.
