Kiss the Chef

The chef deserving of affection is Horacio Mazariegos, who, with his wife, Lorraine, runs this breakfast and lunch eatery. For ten years, the couple had worked as corporate caterers in Manhattan. Now, they have brought their talents to this lovingly restored railroad car diner from the 1940s, which has stood on the same spot for the past 57 years.
In addition to diner classics - pancakes, French toast, burgers and omelets - Mazariegos, a native of Guatemala, offers a few Latin American specialties, such as huevos rancheros served with homemade tortillas. There is usually a changing Latin special available daily.
Mazariegos is particularly proud of such all-American dishes as his Cobb salad, his sloppy Joe chicken sandwich on a brioche roll and his tuna salad made with herbed mayonnaise. Another homestyle item is chicken pot pie. A selection of soups changes daily. They're made "from scratch," of course.
