In 1940, Zorn's opened its first poultry store in Bethpage, selling the turkeys and chickens that the family raised on seven local farms. In 1950, their take-out service began with rotisserie-roasted chicken. As Long Island got built up over the next decades, the farms went by the wayside but Zorn's take-out business took off. New stores opened in Bellmore and East Meadow that also had seating for eat-in customers.
The business is still family owned and operated, and the soul of the operation is still poultry. Chicken on the bone can be had rotisserie-roasted or Southern fried, and in quantities from a leg-thigh combination to a 24-piece family dinner. There are also sesame chicken tenders, grilled chicken cutlets and barbecue or hot wings. Turkey dinners, with stuffing and gravy, are available year-round. (And more than a few Long Island families rely on Zorn's for their Thanksgiving meals.) Zorn's also does a great job with barbecued spare ribs.
Sides range from the predictable--mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, cole slaw--to the unexpected--penne alla vodka and chicken fried rice. Well, maybe the latter is to be expected.
