They charge by the person in Long Beach, but it's worth it. It's $20 per person over the age of 13. Season passes are available. Groups of 10 or more can get deals.

The boardwalk is a cool walk, lined with apartment buildings with jealousy-inducing views of the water.

Long Beach is Nassau County's surfer paradise and there are beach volleyball leagues as well. Bikes and rollerblades are permitted on the boardwalk.

• Get there crazy early on weekends if you expect to park close. If it's after noon, take the first spot you see and hoof it if necessary.
• Don't be afraid to park on the east end and walk a few blocks west to the boardwalk. You'll often find more parking there.
